Don’t Ever Compromise on Power Supplies for ATEX Systems

“It’s more than just a logo on a datasheet” – says Marco van der Linden, UK Country Manager for PULS Power DIN Rail Power supplies are found in almost every industrial process control system. They may be required to provide power to electronic controls, relays and contactors, for PoE communication systems or for motor drives. During the conversion from AC mains to lower DC power outputs, switch mode power supplies produce high voltages and currents that, if incorrectly designed, may cause sparks and may also generate excess heat through inefficient design topologies being used. Certification of equipment and protective systems for use in hazardous areas such as offshore installations have be

Dazzled by Floodlight Glare in a Totally Dark Tank?

A totally enclosed, dark tank in a hazardous location which needs inspecting, cleaning or repairing is never going to win a workplace of the month award. You need good portable lighting just to see where you’re going, let alone carry out the task. If you’re working in a team there will be floodlights in use in different locations within the tank and the last thing you want is to be dazzled by the glare of your own light or those of your colleagues. Aware of the problem Wolf Safety, world leaders in portable and temporary safety lighting, have found the ideal solution. Their design team has developed an easily portable LED task floodlight, designed to reduce beam glare when working in potenti

World’s Smallest Imaging Sonar Launched

Impact Subsea has launched the world’s smallest imaging sonar. At only 72mm high and 47mm wide the ISS360 sonar provides excellent image clarity with a range capability of up to 90 meters / 295 feet. Depth rated to 4,000 meters / 13,123 feet the ISS360 is an ideal navigation and target identification sonar for the smallest to the largest underwater vehicles. The ISS360 Sonar can be supplied with an integrated Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) providing highly stable Heading, Pitch and Roll readings. The sonar provides a full 360° field of vision with the aid of a mechanically scanned transducer. The transducer utilises inductive coupling to the sonar electronics for operation with

Hiretech Increases Pumping and Hydraulic Offerings

Hiretech Limited has recently completed the build of several new pumping and hydraulic units as it continues investment to enhance its rental fleet and service offerings to meet evolving industry demands. With a recent focus on investment in subsea and decommissioning rental capabilities, the company has added additional high flow jetting pumps for cohesive soil excavations and increased its high pressure pumping options to support client marine growth removal, abrasive jetting and coatings removal applications. Additional Zone 1 electric and Zone 2 and Safe Area diesel driven hydraulic power units have also been added to the rental fleet to support increased platform based decommissioning s

Elmeridge Cables Limited Supply Another Bespoke Product

Elmeridge Cables Limited are pleased to announce that we have recently supplied another satisfied European customer in the subsea market. We produced a combined power and signal cable, with two 2.5mm2 power conductors and a screened twisted pair of 0.50mm2 conductors for data transmission. With an outer jacket of our own ‘Supreme Polyurethane’, the cable is also abrasion, UV and hydrolysis resistant and therefore perfect for long-term submersion in the arduous underwater marine and offshore environment. Each length of 240 metres was fitted with Kevlar cable stockings (also produced and sold by Elmeridge Cables Limited) for strain relief, terminated with the customer’s preferred SubConn conne

Training Continuity During Travel Restriction

Epidemics of infectious diseases are occurring more often and spreading at a faster rate (source – World Health Organisation). Diseases are on a continuous evolution. Will history repeat itself with another outbreak similar to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) or Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and put a standstill to the training and development of the workforce? The answer is likely yes. With the current situation in Asia and the world, organisations and individuals are implementing travel restrictions to countries affected by COVID-19. Asia has not seen a public health emergency with COVID-19 since SARS in 2003. Outbreaks as such are a fact of life and the common flu is not spared.

Air Pressure Alarm From Link Instruments Improves Commercial Diving Safety

Designed to meet international safety guidelines for the supply of breathing air, a new air pressure alarm has been developed by Link Instruments for commercial diving and confined space operations. The unit can monitor air supplies for up to three divers, and is normally used for monitoring the pressure of the outgoing supply. However, by changing the pressure transducers the same unit can be used for both high and low pressure monitoring. It can be built into new systems or retrofitted into existing ones to provide an audio-visual warning. This gives the supervisor/operator the additional safety benefits of making existing diving panels conform to the IMCA international code of practice fo

Hiretech Limited Makes Significant Investment in Subsea Capabilities

Hiretech Limited has invested significantly in personnel and equipment to enhance its capabilities and offerings in the subsea and decommissioning sectors. Duncan Duthie has recently joined the firm as Business Development Manager for Subsea and Decommissioning rentals. Commenting on his new role, Mr Duthie said, “I am delighted to be joining Hiretech during a sustained period of growth and investment. Working with clients within the subsea sector is not new to the business, strong relationships already exist, therefore the foundations are in place to allow further development of the subsea capabilities and continued growth. The opportunity to work within an organisation with unequalled leve

Industrial Fans for Offshore Platforms

Offshore oil and gas platforms incorporate a wide range of fan applications from production areas, power generation and compressor cooling. Offshore sites are built to withstand the harsh and corrosive environments in which they’re situated, and therefore components within systems must be suitable for purpose. Where hazardous gases are present, ATEX variants are required and should be specified by the system manufacturer’s maintenance manuals to advise the zone that the components should be certified to. Corrosion resistant fans that are open to the external elements should be used, special paint grades are available depending on the corrosively of the environment. This extends the life of t
