J2 SUBSEA 4 PORT TOOL CHANGERS TO BE USED FOR THE FIRST TIME ON BRAZILIAN MOBO CAMPAIGN

J2 Subsea, an Acteon company, ROV and survey tooling rental and sale specialist, has announced a large order for its 4 Port Tool Changers in collaboration with Palm Tecnologia for a MOBO intervention campaign offshore Brazil planned for 2018. The J2 Subsea 4 Port Tool Changer enables ROVs to connect with tools subsea with zero leakages. Cost and time savings are achieved because the ROV does not have to make multiple trips between the vessel and the seabed to replace each tool. Further savings in time and costs are generated through the compact dimensions and low weight of the 4 Port Tool Changer in air - ROV end 18.4kg and tool end 5.4kg. These factors make it economically viable to transpo

COST OF ANODE REPAIR CUT WITH COUGAR

An advanced anode repair concept has been launched with the help of Saab Seaeye’s Cougar XT electric e-robotic underwater vehicle as a development platform. The new concept, created by SubC Partner, is said to save up to 75% in costs compared to hydraulic delivered anode repair systems. It can be adapted for any size and shape of sacrificial anode, whether surface mounted or welded. It offers a very fast anode exchange procedure that avoids diver intervention and can be undertaken in extreme weather conditions. The system comes as a skid, and is a resource targeted at offshore wind installations, oil and gas fields and a range of maritime facilities. This includes anode repair at monopiles,

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRESSURE TRANSMITTER FOR HAZARDOUS AREAS

Using electrical equipment in a hazardous location is a health and safety headache. Choosing the wrong pressure transmitter can cause problems, from simply wasting money to causing life threatening situations. So how do you confidently select the right pressure transmitter? Hazardous Zones First you need to understand hazardous locations. Explosive atmospheres can be caused by flammable gases, mists, vapours or combustible dusts. If there is enough of the substance mixed with the air, even the smallest of sparks could cause an explosion. The ATEX directive categorises hazardous areas like this: • Zone 0/ 20 means that the area is constantly or often hazardous • Zone 1/ 21 means that the area

KEEPING THE CLEVER BITS DRY

Roy Phillips, MD of Intelliconnect (Europe), considers the evolution of waterproof connectors Some time ago a manufacturer of Locator Beacons, approached us and requested we design a range of special connectors. Despite the small quantities involved, we were happy to oblige. “They need to be waterproof (unmated).” OK that’s fine, a piece of hermetic glass in the rear end will work! They told us that was too expensive. They wanted to pay the same as a standard connector And - “We need it to be highly reliable....with no NRE charge.” So, we had to design, develop, sample, machine, plate, assemble and deliver a range of four connectors with a completely new feature, in seven weeks!! The connect

HEY SIRI - WHAT WOULD A 'NO DEAL' BREXIT MEAN FOR THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY?

The discussion around hard Brexit, soft Brexit, divorce bill, transition arrangements, new trade deals and the Chequers Brexit plan is now rapidly turning into a bewildering array of statements, claims and counter claims. The Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, explained it well when he told the BBC in early August that “the possibility of a no-deal Brexit is uncomfortably high and highly undesirable.” Mr Carney also said that “if a no-deal Brexit were to happen, it could mean disruption to trade and economic activity, as well as higher prices for a period of time.” So what is the real impact of Brexit on the UK and the UK oil and gas industry specifically? Luckily the internet pro

NEW RUD ROV HOOK OFFERS EXCEPTIONAL SAFETY IN SUBSEA LIFTING

Subsea construction often requires specialised and expensive equipment to be safely lowered to the seabed and accurately positioned for installation in a reliable and cost effective way. Over the years there have been many incidents involving hooks in the offshore industry. The two most common incidents are snagging of hooks and unintentional release of the rigging from the hooks, also known as shedding. The ‘Snap Hook’ was designed to replace the original ‘Single Point Hook’ for ROV attachment and detachment. The design included an increased nose protrusion to facilitate easy attachment of slings and master links, as well as providing the ability to release rigging from the hook. Although t
