Celebrating 20 years of subsea innovation with strategic investment in people, technology, and global delivery.
Ellon-based subsea specialist Film-Ocean Ltd has entered 2025 with strong momentum, building on two decades of operational excellence with a clear focus on sustainability, workforce growth, and international expansion. With its fleet of high-specification Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and a proven track record across diverse environments, the company continues to deliver impactful solutions to the global energy sector.

Strengthening Community and Energy Transition GoalsEarlier this month, Film-Ocean hosted Harriet Cross MP and Councillor John Crawley at its headquarters in Ellon. The visit highlighted the company’s commitment to local engagement, workforce development, and environmental responsibility.
As part of its sustainability agenda, Film-Ocean is actively working toward energy self-sufficiency. Solar panels have already been installed at its facility, and planning applications are in progress for a state of the art, vertical axis 125KW wind turbine—positioning the business to generate its own power on-site.
Through collaboration with Developing the Young Workforce (DYW), Film-Ocean is also investing in the next generation of subsea talent by expanding its apprenticeship and graduate programme, creating career pathways within the energy industry for young people across Aberdeenshire.
“It was a valuable opportunity to highlight not only the scale and expertise of our operations but also our role in supporting local employment, skills development, and the energy transition,” said Mike Mackie, Head of Operations.
Global ROV Deployment & Specialist ServicesFilm-Ocean is steadily cementing its position as a key player in the offshore industry, with an expanding global footprint that underscores its growing influence across international waters.
The company’s fleet of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) is currently supporting a diverse array of complex offshore operations, further solidifying its presence in both domestic and international markets. In the first quarter of this year, Film-Ocean has also secured several high-profile contract wins, notably in the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) and European markets, reinforcing its reputation as a trusted partner for offshore clients.
Among the company’s achievements is the full utilisation of its work-class fleet in the first quarter, a clear indicator of Film-Ocean’s ability to meet the rigorous demands of offshore operations. With active projects spanning Asia, Africa, the Black Sea, and the Mediterranean, Film-Ocean is rapidly establishing a positive global presence. Long-term contracts already in place ensure that this momentum will continue throughout the year, with multi-year framework agreements paving the way for sustained growth and success.

As evidence of its strong technological capabilities Film-Ocean’s Atom Work-Class ROV is currently operating from parent company Stapem Offshore’s Stapem Boreale vessel off the coast of West Africa. This cutting-edge, high-powered integrated diving and ROV solution is integral to a series of complex underwater tasks, including Underwater Inspections in Lieu of Dry-Docking (UWILD) on critical offshore assets. The importance of these inspections cannot be overstated, as they help ensure the integrity and safety of vital infrastructure without the need for costly and time-consuming dry-docking procedures.
As Film-Ocean continues to grow and evolve, its strategic expansion into new markets, coupled with the success of its work-class fleet and advanced ROV technologies, points to a bright future. With a proven track record in providing essential offshore services, Film-Ocean is well-positioned to maintain its leadership role in the offshore industry, ensuring operational efficiency, safety, and long-term sustainability for its clients worldwide.
The company’s ability to deliver reliable, innovative solutions in such a competitive and demanding field suggests that the best is yet to come for Film-Ocean and its global expansion efforts.
Scaling for SuccessTo meet growing demand, Film-Ocean has continued to scale its team, with new hires joining across technical and operations roles in Q1 2025. The increase in workforce further strengthens the company’s ability to execute high-specification projects across multiple regions.
As the business celebrates 20 years of subsea expertise, Film-Ocean remains focused on its core values of safety, innovation, and performance—delivering world-class service while supporting the energy transition and investing in the next generation of offshore professionals.
