As global demand for low-emission fuels rises, liquefied natural gas (LNG) is becoming the marine and offshore industry’s fuel of the future. From deep-sea container vessels to land-based regasification terminals, LNG offers significant advantages—but only if its storage and handling processes can be made reliably safe. That’s where the 80-GHz radar level sensor, VEGAPULS 6X, steps in.

Capable of operating at process temperatures as low as -196°C, VEGAPULS 6X delivers accurate, non-contact level measurement in the most extreme cryogenic applications. Whether on LNG-powered cruise ships or offshore terminals, the sensor ensures measurement reliability regardless of temperature, pressure, or density.
Constructed from high-grade stainless steel and featuring thermal decoupling, the sensor’s robust housing shields its sensitive internal electronics from harsh environments. Its front-flush PTFE antenna cover also provides protection from icing, condensation, and aggressive media—including acids, alkalis, and abrasive substances.
One of the sensor’s standout features is its ability to handle media with low dielectric constants (DK). This is especially critical in LNG and LPG applications, where small DK values typically make radar level measurement difficult.
Thanks to a dynamic range of 120 dB, VEGAPULS 6X can reliably detect even the smallest reflection signals—ensuring consistent accuracy even when measuring poorly reflective hydrocarbons.
The 80-GHz radar’s focussed beam plays a crucial role in LNG storage tanks where sensors must often measure through ball valves without interrupting the process. With minimal interference from tank internals or valve hardware, VEGAPULS 6X delivers precise level readings—even in insulated or separated installations typical of LNG applications.
Safety is central to the design of VEGAPULS 6X. The sensor is certified for SIL (Safety Integrity Level) applications and includes an integrated self-diagnosis system that continuously monitors sensor function. If performance is impaired, the system detects it immediately—improving plant availability and reducing risk.

A major technological leap forward comes from a custom-built radar chip, developed entirely in-house. This second-generation chip offers low energy consumption, high sensitivity, and direct antenna integration, ensuring both performance and reliability. VEGAPULS 6X also meets the highest standards of cybersecurity in line with IEC 61511, protecting both the process and the control system.
As LNG continues to reshape offshore energy, instruments like VEGAPULS 6X are enabling safer, smarter operations. With its proven resilience, high precision, and integrated safety technology, it’s a sensor designed to meet the demands of a changing energy landscape.
