Zwanny the Key Oil Pollution Equipment Supplier for Nearshore and Offshore Applications

Global discoveries of hydrocarbons and gas continue to show promising growth, with new finds totalling 6.7 billion barrels of oil in the first half of 2019. Even in UK waters things are not looking too bad, for example only this year the Glengorm field was discovered with an estimated 250 million barrels of oil.

With all these discoveries, there is the possibility of pollution from the rig. In July 2019 there was an ongoing spill at Pertamina’s offshore north west Java block. The spill is believed to have been caused by a pressure imbalance in the well bore (known as a well kick). The spill has pumped an estimated 3000 barrels of oil a day into the sea since it began, the slick has spread more than 11,100 acres, and oil has now been found 52 miles west of the well, while work is carried out to shut the well off.

There is a lot of oil pollution equipment required in a spill of that size, however Zwanny have got equipment for these type of cases. In comparison of a clean up, the cost might be a drop in the ocean, but would be worth keeping spill kits on board a supply vessel, an FPSO or even on the rigs. As it is well known, a boom system would be ideal as a recommendation and Zwanny would suggest to use a Heavy duty Neoprene boom manufactured by Lamor and supplied by Zwanny as per their specification.

The Heavy Duty Boom (HDB) is a robust and durable air inflated rubber boom that covers the increasing demands for off shore operations as well as permanent installations, such as oil terminals, refineries and power plants.

Moreover, the HDB can be utilized in all climatic conditions and environments, including Arctic conditions!

The HDB boom is manufactured utilizing two layers of synthetic fabric that are vulcanized together with four layers of UV and oil resistant synthetic rubber. The stiffeners, anchoring points and ASTM fixing plates are vulcanized between the fabric layers of the boom. This ensures a robust structure in addition to easy cleaning and maintenance. The boom is equipped with yellow stripe and reflectors for improved visibility. The ballast chain is a hot dip galvanized 10 mm (3/8 in) steel chain that gives strength, correct and stable deployment in sweeping operations and facilitates excellent sea keeping properties. The patented Lamor F1 air valve makes the inflation and deflation by a single operator of the HDB significantly easier and quicker. The F1 air valve features a flat design with an incorporated airlock without removable parts.

The HDB is a reliable and durable boom and has been permanently deployed at several refineries worldwide for over a decade in harsh climatic conditions with very low maintenance required. For your application Zwanny can supply the boom on a reel or in a container. The container option also allows for the inclusion of a skimmer system and tank to contain some of the possible spill. Zwanny can custom build a solution to your requirements. As mentioned, it might be a drop in the ocean for a large spill but worth a small investment.
