OPITO INVITES NEXT GENERATION INTO THE INDUSTRY WORKPLACE
CHANCE FOR NORTH-EAST PUPILS TO GAIN HANDS ON EXPERIENCE DURING THREE DAY EVENT
Secondary school pupils aged 16 and over from across the North-east of Scotland are being encouraged to sign up for the opportunity to delve into the innovative world of energy.
OPITO, the global not-for-profit skills body for the energy sector, launched its UKCS Workforce Dynamics Review earlier this month. The report indicated that 40,000 new recruits will be required to support the industry over the next 20 years.
The organisation’s Industry Awareness programme, which runs from Tuesday June 26th for three days, aims to spark the interest of the next generation. The initiative will see students teamed up with employers to provide an insight into business operations and inspire pupils to consider a future career in energy.
Companies taking part include Aker Solutions, EnerMech, EnQuest, Falck Safety Services Ltd and the Oil and Gas Technology Centre. Students from schools across the region will take part in workshops, office tours and interactive activities. They will also have the opportunity to discuss entry routes with industry professionals.
OPITO CEO, John McDonald, said: “Since it began four years ago, OPITO’s Industry Awareness programme has become a highly anticipated and well attended week. For young people studying science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects, it provides a unique experience inside some of the biggest and most well-respected employers in the Aberdeen area.
As our recent UKCS Workforce Dynamics Review revealed, the future of the sector holds some exciting opportunities for the next generation such as artificial intelligence, robotics and digital roles many of which currently don’t exist today. Providing young people on the cusp of their career decisions with real life work experience will help them to make more informed choices at a key time in their lives.”
