DAMEN VEROLME ROTTERDAM COMPLETES REFIT OF DRILLING RIG STENA DON

Damen Verolme Rotterdam (DVR) has completed a major refit of the Stena Drillingowned 5th generation, semi-submersible drilling rig Stena Don. The vessel arrived at DVR in October 2018 and departed for her new contract off the UK’s Shetland Islands in February 2019. The most significant aspect of the works was the installation of an eight-point mooring system for her future drilling contracts. By using this for holding position, emissions will be significantly reduced and substantial savings on fuel costs will be made. The upgrade also enables the rig to work in shallower waters than before which greatly increases her operational envelope. DVR, one of Damen Shipyards Group’s most experienced

"INCREDIBLE" - JWF REMAINS DEDICATED TO QUALITY IN UNDERWATER CAMERA SYSTEMS

According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, approximately 71% of our planet is covered in water. An in-depth 2012 study estimated that up to 1,000,000 species live in our oceans, with up to 66% not yet named or even discovered. There are literally hundreds of thousands of marine species waiting to be captured on video and shared with the world. There should be no question that the tools to capture underwater video will continue to enjoy strong demand; especially as technological advancements dramatically increase the capabilities and effectiveness of these tools. The earliest underwater video is generally accepted to have been filmed in 1940 by Austrian biologist and diver Hans Hass; i

LARGE BOLTED JOINTS MADE EASY WITH HEICO-TEC

Tensioning of large bolted joints usually requires the use of electric, hydraulic or pneumatic tools, a factor that adds additional costs and delay to any project. When tightening a bolt with a hydraulic cylinder the bolt is elongated and the nut is then tightened free of load. When the hydraulic pressure is released the bolt contracts, resulting in the proper tension in the bolt being achieved. The disadvantage of this process is that as the nut was not pre-tensioned while the bolt was elongated, a percentage of the elongation of the bolt is lost in joint settlement meaning only around two thirds of the bolt strength can be utilized. The HEICO-TEC® Tension Nut, from the company that produce

STRESS ENGINEERING SERVICES RECEIVES OTC NEW TECHNOLOGY AWARD FOR ITS CONDITION BASED MAINTENANCE (C

Stress Engineering Services, Inc., (SES) the global leader in consulting engineering services, has received an OTC Spotlight on New Technology (SONT) Award for its condition based maintenance (CBM) of drilling riser systems. Stress Engineering developed a new process for collecting critical riser data, which utilizes a life cycle condition based monitoring (CBM), maintenance and inspection system that can be deployed on the mobile operating drilling unit (MODU). It enables resources to be deployed only when necessary, instead of on a calendar interval. The CBM system reliably determines the condition of drilling riser joints, consistently predicts when vital components will require service a

LEEA TECHNICAL TRIAGE UPDATE

The Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA) is encouraging any member in the world to send in any technical question they may have by email to: technicaladvice@leeaint.com. This is the first port of call for the LEEA Technical Triage system, which aims to deliver a final resolution to a question within 48 hours. LEEA has been fine-tuning the helpful Technical Triage system to better monitor and control the technical support it provides to members. All LEEA staff have been allocated responsibilities under the Triage. For many this will simply mean ensuring that they forward any technical queries to the Technical Assistant. He will then log the query onto the system. So what is LEEA try
